PRESIDENT OF the Association of Ghana Industries, Dr. Humphrey Ayim-Darke, has commended the National Election Security Taskforce (NESTF) headed by Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, for its election strategies to ensure peace and security during the December 7 elections.

Speaking at the NESTF meeting with the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) and other sister associations, Dr. Ayim-Darke indicated that following the briefing on the security measures instituted by the NESTF and the engagement of the private sector in ensuring peace during this year’s elections, he has no doubt that the elections will be smooth and peaceful, as promised by the IGP.

Dr. Ayim-Darke, who described the meeting as historic, highlighted the correlation between a peaceful, stable democracy and a thriving business environment, underscoring the significance of this engagement. “This initiative came as a surprise, but it is multifaceted and crucial to our growth,” he stated.

He said the private sector has long been recognised as the “engine of growth,” and this intentional and purposeful involvement by the IGP marks a pivotal moment.

“The IGP’s leadership in this area is commendable, for his initiatives that assure citizen participation in the electoral process, while prioritising transparency and accountability as essential elements of a stable democratic society.

“We pledge our support not only as citizens who will vote, but also in addressing challenges through established channels. We are committed to ensuring that this innovative engagement continues to strengthen our nation and resilient democracy,” he added.

Dr. Dampare emphasised that Ghana cannot go back on its progress as far as democracy is concerned.

He said the election security taskforce decided to engage the traders’ associations in deep reflection to improve upon its past elections.

“Our aim is not just to be better than in the last election, but to enhance security measures beyond what has been achieved before. We want to assure you that this time around, we will prioritise security more than ever,” he added.

“So, I encourage you to relax and focus on your future projections. Our democracy is here to stay, and we will protect it with every fibre of our being for the sake of future generations. Our plan for this election and beyond is groundbreaking,” he said.

According to Dr. Dampare, for the first time, they will be mainstreaming election security into the overall security arrangements, to make election security a continuous process rather than a one-time event.

“I want to assure you that we are committed to collaborating with all intelligence structures. For the first time, we have established a toll-free number to gather intelligence from across the country,” he added.

Dr. Dampare further mentioned that this initiative extends beyond traditional channels; to empower citizens to provide the Police Service with information.

He said citizens who prefer not to engage directly with a regional or divisional commander can call the toll-free number on 0800 311 31, which is available 24/7.
