A fully loaded fuel tanker, which broke down at Asiakwa Junction close to Bunso on the Accra to Kumasi Highway in the Eastern Region on Monday evening exploded killing two persons.
The fuel tanker had developed a faulty brake and parked at Asiakwa junction.
The severe accident involved a fully loaded DAF tanker with 54,000 liter petrol, two Mazda Demios, and a Hyundai truck.
The tanker caught fire after one of the taxi cabs rammed into it leading to a significant vehicular fire due to fuel spillage.
The collision caused extensive fire damage, with the detached bulk tank of the DAF tanker (GC 1054-11) and one Mazda Demio (GW 3254-13) completely burnt.
In the cause of the accident another Mazda Demio (CR 1182-19), the Hyundai truck (WR 4108-13), and the cowl of the DAF tanker suffered partial damage.
The deceased taxi driver and a passenger, who were nearing the junction, tried to avoid the rolling tanker but unfortunately got trapped underneath it.
Two other passengers who were in the taxi in a miraculous way managed to escape shortly after the collision, before the vehicle was engulfed in flames.
In the cause of the accident, the driver of the Kia truck and his mate both sustained head injuries, as the mate reportedly died shortly upon arrival at the Osiem Saviour Memorial Hospital.
The Ghana National Fire Service and the Police rushed to the scene upon hearing the information to quench the fire after having a tough time.
Meanwhile, the road has since been cleared for vehicles, as the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at a certain morgue for perseveration.
