UDS starting 11
THE UNIVERSITY for Development Studies (UDS) has achieved a historic milestone by defeating Brazil’s Paulista University 2-1 to clinch the 2025 FISU University World Cup Football title.
The final, played on Sunday morning, brought together the Tamale-based side and the defending champions in a contest that fully matched its billing. Paulista struck first, using their experience to seize an early lead.
UDS, however, showed remarkable resilience. Though pressed for much of the game — particularly in the second half — the Ghanaian team fought to stay alive.
Their persistence was rewarded deep into stoppage time when they netted a dramatic equaliser to force extra time.
Both teams pushed relentlessly for victory in the added minutes, and with the match appearing destined for a penalty shootout, UDS delivered the decisive blow. A late corner kick was converted to seal a famous 2-1 win.
The triumph not only dethroned Paulista University but also marked a continental breakthrough, with UDS becoming the first African university ever to lift the FISU University World Cup trophy.
