UEW Launches IPR Student Chapter

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has launched a student Chapter of the Institute of Public Relations (IPR) Ghana to nurture the next generation of Public Relations professionals.

The event which was organised by the Department of Strategic Communication of the University is also aimed at enhancing the ability and status of students as budding professionals.

Among some of the renowned Public Relations Professionals present include Esther Cobbah, President of the Institute of Public Relations (IPR) Ghana, Arik Karani, President of the African Public Relations Association (APRA) and Ivy Heward Mills, Student Chapter Coordinator of IPR Ghana.

The event was also attended by student and staff of the School of Communication and Media Studies and other members of the University community.

Speaking at the inauguration, President of Institute of Public Relations (IPR), Ghana and Special Guest for the event, Esther Cobbah, highlighted the important role young Public Relations professionals play in shaping the future of the industry.

The renowned professional who swore into office the new student leaders of the IPR-UEW Chapter also emphasised the need for continuous learning, adaptability, innovation and ethical practice in the PR profession as it evolves.

She also stressed on the significance of responsibility and accountability in their leadership roles while commending the Department for the strategic move to fostering an environment where students could excel not only in their academic persuit but become proficient as Public Relations professionals.

Prof. Mavis Amo-Mensah, Head of the Department of Strategic Communication at University of Education Winneba, for her part, also expressed excitement at the enthusiasm shown by the students in the Chapter, emphasising the commitment of the Department to enable the school bring real-world relevance to the classroom.

“The Department is focused on connecting what students learn in the classroom to real-world scenarios, therefore, the formation of the Chapter provides an ideal platform for students to engage with industry experts, participate in professional events, and gain practical experiences that will enhance their career prospects,” she added.

Mr. Arik Karani also shared insights on the evolving dynamics of public relations across Africa, encouraging the communications students to seize opportunities to grow and contribute to the continent’s narrative by reimagining, repositioning and reinforcing their strategies.

He further lauded the initiative by the Department of Strategic Communication, UEW, noting that such efforts are crucial in building a strong connection to the broader African public relations community.
