Freddy Blay and Samuel Ofosu Ampofo
The UN and ECOWAS have continued their quiet diplomacy and good offices role leading up to the December 7, 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections in Ghana.
A UN source revealed that the Secretary General’s Special Representative for West Africa and the Sahel, Dr Mohamed Ibn Chambas, met for two hours with Freddy Blay, NPP Chairman and his NDC counterpart, Ofosu Ampofo.
The two gentlemen had known each other when they were in Parliament. Mr Blay was once a First Deputy Speaker and Mr Ampofo was a Member of Parliament who also served as Minister of Local Government.
The two Chairmen reiterated their parties’ commitment to free, fair peaceful, and nonviolent elections on 7 December.
They both informed their UN interlocutors about their keen awareness of the high expectations on Ghana to uphold the high standards it has established in delivering exemplary elections.
Also present in the meeting were the UN Resident Representative in Ghana, Charles Abani and the ECOWAS Ambassador to Ghana, Wakil Ghana.
The UN and ECOWAS are said to have been buoyed by the meeting being highly impressed about the determination of the NPP and NDC Chairman to make their contribution towards a successful and violence free elections on 7 December.
ECOWAS observers have already started arriving in the country to monitor the polls.
The ECOWAS Observer Mission will be led by former Liberian President, Ellen Sirleaf Johnson.
