Unmasking A HIPC ‘Deceit’

John Mahama

The deceit-laden remarks of former President John Mahama and his campaign team in their frantic bid to festoon a bad fiscal tag around the neck of his successor has backfired and loudly so.

The Country Representative of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) could not afford not to defy the niceties of diplomacy and allow the NDC lie to fly. His reaction was brusque having earlier had to debunk another NDC lie about the performance of the economy under the NPP as attributed to him untruthfully by the opposition party.

Such a reaction from a Bretton Wood entity where moral integrity is an attribute speaks volumes about bottled-up observations in the country office of the IMF.

If the former President and his party do not bow their heads in shame after an important institution such as the IMF has exposed their lies, then perhaps humiliation for them has no significance and therefore of no effect.

The representative of the IMF in Ghana, Touna Mama, would have a lot to discuss with his friends when he exits Ghana one day, the story about a former ruling party’s deceit as it sought a return to the corridors of power being at the centre of such conversations.

Need we belabor the point by describing the former President’s campaign as full of deceit?

That of course is a fact and undeniable as it is becoming a national embarrassment. This is why the growing spate of lies being flown by the NDC must attract a national conversation.

Perhaps this way the party and the flagbearer, a former President who should appreciate more than his juvenile politicians the significance of decency in language and remarks, would have a change of heart and return to the comity of political decency.

One thing can be adduced from the NDC’s mendacious claim that the country has gone HIPC.

It is intended to pile up more dust in the eyes of the gullible whose number is however shrinking as the number of the enlightened dwarfs its contrary.

Above all, the NDC seeks to have Ghanaians lose confidence in the President’s ability to manage the economy. What a way to attempt to retaliate for the ‘incompetence tag’ Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia foisted around the former President. It is still haunting him like a bad dream and he will do everything to retaliate including lying and attributing same to the IMF.

More Ghanaians have understood the nature of politics according to the rule book of the former President and now deride most of his postulations.

Why would Ghana going HIPC be an announcement left to the former President and his team to announce to Ghanaians?

Seeking the source of the propaganda stuff would not be far-fetched because after all the cornerstone of the NDC campaign is lies and plenty of it.

The role of the former President in spreading lies on social media using his willing youth for the assignment should be marginalized because it is real.

He pushes them to undertake daredevil image-denting assignments as he claps behind-the-scene for jobs well done.

The following statement from the IMF says it all about an entity which does not want to be drawn into unappealing politics of the NDC.

“We would like to take this opportunity to encourage you to seek clarification before giving credence to rumor involving the IMF in Ghana. We reserve the right to issue a public statement to make such clarifications as needed,” Mr. Touna Mama concluded.
