Officials of the Ghana Highways Authority in the Upper East Region have given assurance that work on the Kulungugu and Tamne Bridges in the Pusiga District and Garu District respectively will soon be completed.

A heavy-duty truck laden with foodstuffs caused damage to the Tamne Bridge, which links the Garu District to the Bawku Municipality, in June 2017.

The bridge aids in the transportation of foodstuffs over the Tamne River in the area to Bawku and others.

The Kulungugu Bridge, on the other hand, had to be closed down in March 2018 by the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) due to multiple cracks.

To ensure that commuters travel to and from the Kulungugu Community and neighbouring countries, the Ghana Highways created a temporary route.

The Kulungugu Bridge links Pusiga District and the Bawku Municipality to Burkina-Faso, Togo and Niger.

The Upper East Regional Director of the Ghana Highways Authority, Philip Samwini, has stated that none of the two bridges has an Axle Load Weighing Centre to check weight.

The Upper East Regional Minister, Rockson Ayine Bukari, over the weekend, inspected work on the two bridges and called on the Ghana Highways Authority to complete the work.

Speaking at the Kulungugu Bridge during his inspection tour, the Minister reminded the Highways Authority of the importance of the bridge to the district and the entire region.

“Make sure every little work left is done before opening the bridges to the public to use. If the bridge is in good shape, it will be easy for trucks to pass even when the rains start. Pusiga District will be able to generate the needed revenue to carry out its development plans,” the Minister noted.

Meanwhile, the Regional Minister has directed the Ghana Highways Authority to remove all debris under the Kulungugu Bridge.
