Prof. Opoku-Agyemang flanked by President Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama

 

Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang was yesterday welcomed back home by President John Dramani Mahama after recovering from a recent illness in London, the United Kingdom.

President Mahama, joined by First Lady Lordina Mahama, gave the Vice President, whose illness kept her away for several weeks, a warm reception at the Kotoka International Airport.

Other government officials including Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Vice President’s Chief of Staff Alex Segbefia, and other high-ranking government officials were also present to give the Vice President a warm welcome.

Also at the airport were the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church and family members of the Vice President.

In her brief remarks, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang thanked Ghanaians for their prayers, expressed appreciation to her doctors and the medic staff at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC), and celebrated President Mahama and his younger brother, Ibrahim Mahama, for their support, thoughtfulness and care.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang reportedly fell ill on Friday, March 28, 2025, and was admitted to the UGMC the following day for treatment.

A communication from the Presidency issued Sunday, March 30, 2025 by the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, indicated that the Vice President was taken ill after work on Friday, March 28, 2025.

The statement further indicated that she received initial treatment at UGMC, and on the advice of her medical handlers, she will travel out of the jurisdiction for further treatment.

“Based on expert medical opinion, she will be seeking further care abroad. We wish the Vice President a speedy recovery,” the press release further read.
