The Volta Regional Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has commenced internal investigations following the arrest of one of its official drivers over alleged unlawful possession and conveyance of suspected narcotic substances.
The development, which has generated widespread public attention after circulating on social media, was confirmed in a press release signed by the Volta Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Emmanuel Atsu Dodor.
According to the statement, the individual at the centre of the matter, Mr. Godsway Kwaku Dogbey, is a driver attached to the Directorate. On Friday, January 23, 2026, the Transport Unit of the Directorate received information that Mr. Dogbey had been arrested and detained at the Volta Regional Police Headquarters in Ho.
The arrest reportedly occurred while the driver was operating an official vehicle belonging to the Volta Regional Health Directorate, with registration number GV 2460–14, which was allegedly transporting items suspected to be narcotic substances.
Following the report, management of the Directorate immediately dispatched a team to the Regional Police Headquarters to verify the information and engage with the police. The police subsequently confirmed the incident, indicating that the driver is currently in custody as investigations continue.
While the Ghana Police Service leads the criminal investigation, the Directorate has also initiated internal administrative processes. These include steps to establish a Committee of Enquiry to independently examine the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine any breaches of conduct or protocol.
Additionally, the Directorate announced plans to strengthen its monitoring and tracking systems for official vehicles to prevent a recurrence of similar incidents in the future.
Reaffirming its commitment to transparency and ethical standards, the Volta Regional Health Directorate assured the public of its full cooperation with law enforcement agencies and pledged to take appropriate actions in accordance with established procedures.
“The Volta Regional Health Directorate remains committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity, accountability, and professionalism in the delivery of health services,” it added.
