VONS BRAND Limited—a local company that uses natural ingredients to produce cosmetics—is extending support to women with disabilities to bring out the best in them.
According to Yvonne Amankwah, CEO of Vons Brand Ltd, her vision of empowering women with disabilities to prove to the world that they were special was hinged on the fact that “they are not a burden on society, and if we can make a collective effort to help these women find work, it will help the community and the nation as a whole.”
“In Ghana, people are using a lot of chemicals on their bodies that damage the skin. We chose instead to use natural ingredients like shea butter, which doesn’t have any impurities,” she added.
Ms. Amankwah noted that she trains women with disabilities to bring out their creative skills and help to refine these towards economic empowerment.
“I noticed years ago that a lot of women at Kaneshie where I live had disabilities. And I noticed that the majority were unemployable. I wanted to find a way to help them earn a living, somehow,” she said.
Now a 2019 Mandela Washington Fellow, Yvonne said she was still learning from others while she continued to teach others across Ghana.
