Walk The Talk Group, in collaboration with the School of Languages and Careers & Counselling Centre (University of Ghana), is today organising a poetry event in commemoration of UNESCO World Poetry Day at Casa Hispanica, University of Ghana, at 11:00 am.
Themed, ‘Creativity & Culture, Ensuring Equal Rights For All,’ World Poetry Day is the occasion to honour poets, revive oral traditions of poetry recitals, promote the reading, writing and teaching of poetry, foster convergence between poetry and other arts such as theatre, dance, music and painting, and raise the visibility of poetry in the media.
Held annually on 21st March, World Poetry Day celebrates one of humanity’s most treasured forms of cultural and linguistic expressions and identities. Practised throughout history – in every culture and on every continent – poetry speaks to mankind’s common humanity and shared values, transforming the simplest of poems into a powerful catalyst for dialogue and peace.
UNESCO first adopted 21st March as World Poetry Day during its 30th General Conference in Paris in 1999, with the aim of supporting linguistic diversity through poetic expression and increasing the opportunity for endangered languages to be heard.
Today’s event is being supported by Didi Keke Foundation, JP International, UNESCO Ghana, Korle-Gonno Community Library, Humble Forest Production and the University of Ghana Spanish Club.
