The West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) has expanded its regulating and metering facility at Tema in the Greater Accra to deliver large volumes of gas to the Volta River Authority (VRA) to generate power.
An amount of $3.5 million was said to have been invested in upgrading the existing metering system from 70mmscfd to 140mmscfd.
The project would help deliver additional gas to help meet growing local energy demand to limit carbon dioxide emissions by.
Speaking to the media during a tour of the facility on Thursday, Mrs. Harriet Wereko-Brobby, General Manager in-charge of Corporate Affairs, explained that the move forms part of the measures aimed at positioning WAPCo to meet the needs of players in Ghana’s energy market.
She stated that the expansion project was strategically executed in two phases, with the phase one targeting Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM).
The phase two, she said, involved engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning of the additional 70 MMSCFD metering skid, metering control, accessories (Gas Chromatograph) and instrumentation as an integrated unit.
According to her, the phase one was successfully completed in June 2016 followed by the contract for phase two.
The Corporate Affairs Manager stated that “WAPCo recognises the fact that a lot has changed in the sub-region, especially in Ghana, since the pipeline started operations in 2011. In response to these developments, WAPCo has made a number of adjustments to remain relevant in fulfilling the sub-regional dream of making available clean fuel for generating energy to support development in the participating countries, including Ghana.”
Aside the Tema expansion project, Mrs Wereko-Brobby further said that WAPCo, in conjunction with ENI and the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), is working on a Western Interconnection Project to enable WAGP reverse flow gas from the Western Region of the country to the eastern part.
“The pipeline was originally constructed to transport gas in one direction – from Nigeria to Tema and then to Takoradi and not vice versa. The Western Interconnection Project will make it possible for WAPCo to transport Ghanaian gas from Takoradi to Tema.
“Earlier in July 2012, WAGP was declared an open access system to allow multiple shippers to use the pipeline to transport gas to any of the three gas importing countries. Any suitably qualified entity can now apply to become a shipper with a view to entering into gas transportation contracts with WAPCo,” according to her.
