Nana Enimere Kwaw II
The newly enstooled chief of Wasa Damang in the Prestea Huni Valley Municipality of the Western Region, Nana Enimere Kwaw II, is advocating for a policy change to combat the devastating effects of illegal mining.
The seasoned mining expert is urging the government to make it a policy for all small-scale mining operators, particularly those who are not well-versed in mining issues, to employ mining experts at their respective sites.
According to the chief, the move would help curtail or prevent the wanton destruction of lands and also promote responsible mining practices.
Ghana is struggling to combat the devastating impact of unregulated mining activities on its forest reserves and water bodies.
Despite successive governments’ efforts to halt the menace, the situation persists.
The country’s forest reserves have been severely depleted with over 2.5 million hectares lost to galamsey over the past decade, posing a significant threat to biodiversity.
Nana Enimere Kwaw II pointed out that it is about time the government took bold action to address the environmental damage caused by illegal mining activities.
The chief was speaking in an interview with journalists after he was unveiled to the Wassa Damang community as the new chief on Monday.
He said, “There is the need for mining experts to be present at mining sites to prevent the destruction of lands and water bodies, which is crucial for preserving the country’s ecosystem.”
As the newly enstooled chief of the Wasa Damang community, Nana Enimere Kwaw II pledged to prioritise youth development in the community.
Some traditional leaders who were present advised the new chief to prioritise the well-being and welfare of his subjects as he embarks on his new role.
