HUNDREDS OF residents in Tema of the Greater Accra Region, especially Tema Newtown, have resorted to the use of drainage water for domestic chores following scarcity of water that has hit the metropolis.
Some residents were also forced to collect stagnant and underground water to use in their homes.
Water has not been flowing to various homes in Tema and part of its environs following a fault detected on one of the booster lines belonging to Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) at Gbetsile Junction in the Kpone-Katamansu Municipality.
Residents are yet to see clean water flow through their taps despite an assurance from the Tema Regional office of the GWCL to open the water on Monday to communities that were affected as a result of the maintenance works on the Kpong-Tema booster lines.
The situation, coupled with exorbitant prices of water in the area, has compelled residents to scramble for stagnant water in drains and dugouts at some construction sites for domestic chores.
During a visit to the Valco storage facility near the Tema Fishing Harbour, hundreds of residents were busily fetching coloured water from an underground dugout being used by contractors working on the Tema-Mpakadan Railway project.
Some of the residents who had come to the area with several yellow jericans, commonly called ‘Kufuor Gallons’ and buckets, were seen washing their clothes as well as bathing there.
Residents who spoke to DAILY GUIDE could not hide their frustration against the authorities for doing little to address the situation.
A residents who happens to be a nursing mother, lamented that because of the inflated price of sachet water, she has to rely on the polluted water for her domestic chores.
