We Don’t Get Recognition When We Sound Typically Ghanaian – Kelvyn Boy

Musician Kelvyn Boy has said some Ghanaian artists have been blending Nigerian elements into their music because it gives them recognition.

Speaking with Andy Dosty on Hitz FM, the rising star explained that songs with a strictly Ghanaian sound often struggle to gain international recognition.

“We are finding it hard when we sound typical Ghanaian. I mean, enodey go when we do it like that. Even if ego is just here, you come back and say, ‘Oh, why are we just here and some people are international?’” Kelvyn Boy said.

He highlighted that Nigerian artists sometimes incorporate Ghanaian languages and influences in their songs, creating a unique fusion that appeals to a broader audience. “They don’t sound just them; they sometimes leave theirs and come and say our own. They fuse in. The fusion is what I’m talking about,” he added.

Kelvyn Boy emphasized the importance of balance in music, noting that Ghanaian listeners frequently enjoy Nigerian songs enriched with Ghanaian elements. “Because at the end of the day, it’s the same Ghanaian people who listen to Nigerian songs. We’re talking about balance; they fuse in, and balance is what I think is taking time,” he explained.

The musician, whose recent release “Break It” reinforces his advocacy for musical fusion, believes that this blending of styles could pave the way for greater international success for Ghanaian music.
