Kwabena Tumi
The Western Regional branch of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) has announced that it has passed a special resolution to remove its chairman from office.
The announcement was made after the chairman backed the decision to suspend two national officers of the party over President John Mahama’s controversial Ford car gift from a Burkinabe contractor.
The regional branch stated that Kwabena Tumi’s vote to suspend the General Secretary, Nii Akomfrah and National Youth Organiser, Ernesto Yeboah, does not represent the stance of the regional executives.
Although Nii Akomfrah and Mr. Yeboah are pushing for the President to be investigated for accepting a controversial gift from a Burkinabe businessman, the presidential candidate, Ivor Greenstreet believes he has done nothing wrong.
The Regional CPP, in a petition to the party’s National Chairman, Prof. Edmund Dele, signed by 10 chairpersons, three secretaries and two organizers out of the 28 in the region, indicated that “the majority of the Western Regional Executives are calling for his resignation with immediate effect and hand over the necessary documents to the regional first vice chairman.”
The embattled chairman has also been accused of failing to summon a regional executive meeting for almost a year.
“Since last year November, no regional executive committee meeting has been conducted,” the statement said.
According to the regional executives, the chairman is a chief and therefore cannot take part in active politics according to Section 276 of the 1992 Constitution.
They said, “He is a chief and Bamuhene of the Akim Achwreso Traditional Council in the Eastern Region and his stool name is Nana Meriku Tumi II.”
The two-paged petition that was copied to DAILY GUIDE indicated that the first regional chairman will take over his position in the Western Region.
