Members of Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) would be hosted in Winneba, in the Central Region of Ghana, from Monday, July 29 to Saturday, August 3, 2024 for its delocalised meeting of three Joint Committees.
The sub-regional parliament, at its last sitting in Abuja, confirmed Winneba as venue for the delocalised meetings of the Joint Committee on Agriculture, Environment and Natural Resources, Energy and Mines and Infrastructure.
The main theme of the meeting is ‘Plastic Waste Management: Challenges and Prospects in implementing Community Policies,’ and would be addressed by a tall list of experts on the subject.
Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has been invited as special guest of honour.
At the end of the sessions, Members would be informed on the systems and strategies by which ECOWAS would be resolving the challenges associated with environmentally sound management of plastic waste in the West African region.
The meeting is also expected to make recommendations to the ECOWAS Commission on how to improve legislations within the community to ensure coordinated implementation of environmental management policies and integrated management plans for chemicals and hazardous waste.
The delocalised meetings of the Committees are always organised in the Member States to enhance the visibility of the ECOWAS Parliament and its activities, and to also discuss issues and programmes that relates to the development and integration process of ECOWAS.
Member of Parliament for Effutu in the Central Region, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has said Winneba – the capital of his constituency – has expressed gratitude to ECOWAS Parliament and given assurance that they would receive the best of hospitality.
“Honourable colleagues, just a short message of gratitude; as you may be well aware there is an upcoming joint delocalised committee meeting scheduled for Ghana between July 29 to August 3, and the Bureau graciously granted the request of Ghana to host the programme in Winneba in the Central Region of Ghana outside of the capital city.
“The Committee Chairs and members of these two committees have graciously agreed to come to Winneba, and as the Member of Parliament for the Constituency, I say a very big thank you to you for the honour done us, and also to assure you that the city would be happy to see you and be rest assured that every arrangement would be in place for us to have a good deliberation,” Afenyo-Markin noted.
