Woman, 50, Dies After Falling Into Mining Pit

The scene where the incident occurred

A 50-year-old woman, identified only as Auntie Akos, has met her untimely death after falling into an abandoned mining pit at the Mpasatia Community Mining Site in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region.

The tragic incident occurred around 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 29, 2025.

Reports indicate that the deceased was engaged in illegal mining activities, commonly referred to as ‘galamsey,’ when she accidentally slipped and fell into the unused pit.

She was promptly rescued by some co-workers and rushed to the Frimpong Boateng Clinic at Toase for medical attention. However, hospital authorities pronounced her dead on arrival.

The body of the deceased has since been deposited at the Toase Mortuary, awaiting autopsy.

Local authorities and residents have expressed concern over the increasing dangers posed by abandoned mining pits in the area, and have renewed calls for stricter enforcement of mining regulations to prevent further loss of lives.
