A 46-year-old woman, who attempted to kill a fellow woman over illegal mining popularly called “galamsey” business at Wassa Akropong in the Western Region, has been arrested by the police.

Ama Bono reportedly tried to kill Patricia Oduro when the latter demanded GH¢7,000 allegedly due her for the investment she made in the galamsey business.

The incident happened last Monday at Wassa Japa in the Wassa Amenfi East Municipality of the region.

According to some residents, both women were living in the same house and worked as ‘galamsey’ operators.

Narrating her ordeal, Ms. Oduro said she gave GH¢3,000 to Ms. Bono to invest in a galamsey business.

She said Ms. Bono told her the investment yielded additional GH¢4,000 after some few months.

Ms. Oduro explained that she needed the GH¢7,000 to pay her two-year rent and use part for a “chop bar” business she wanted to venture into.

Ms. Bono later asked Ms. Oduro to accompany her to a galamsey site to collect the money for her.

Ms. Oduro said when they got to a spot on their way to the site Ms. Bono allegedly hit her forehead and neck with a stick and also attacked her with machete before leaving her unconscious.

According to Ms. Oduro, after she regained consciousness she screamed for help and some galamsey operators came to her rescue.

She told her rescuers that Ms. Bono was the one who wanted to kill her.

The rescuers went to the community to inform Ms. Oduro’s uncle, a retired police officer, who also reported the case to the Wassa Akropong Police Command.

The police, together with community folks went to the scene where Ms. Oduro was lying very weak and was rushed to the Wassa Akropong Government Hospital for treatment, after which Ms. Bono was arrested by the police.

The police have launched investigation into the case and assured to arraign the suspect.

Meanwhile, Ms. Oduro has since been discharged from the Wassa Akropong Government Hospital.
