Many people were filled with grief on the premises of the Accra circuit court yesterday when a woman, who could not contain the agony of her son being remanded into custody, broke down in incontrollable tears after the court proceeding.
Her son, Prince Adu-Gyamfi, was hauled before the court for inflicting multiple knife wounds in the face and neck of a female student of the University of Professional Studies Accra (UPSA) in an attempt to steal her phone.
He has also been accused of stabbing another student in the chest when she tried to apprehend him.
Adu-Gyamfi is facing three counts of unlawful entry, causing harm and attempt to commit crime, to which he pleaded not guilty.
His lawyer, Abdul Gafar, tried to get him bailed, but the court, presided over by Aboagye Tandoh, declined the granting of bail, following an opposition by the prosecution, and remanded the accused into custody until February 20, 2018.
This touched his mother and so wept bitterly; and all attempts by her relatives to calm her down did not yield any fruit.
Prince, noticing the distress he had placed his mother in, could do nothing but watch on helplessly as he was led away by the case investigator.
Facts
The facts of the case as presented by Superintendent Patience Mario are that, the accused is unemployed and stays at Medina Zongo in Accra, whiles the complainants – Sandra Aba Nunoo and Eunice OSei – are both students of UPSA residing at Goodwill Hostel.
She said on January 31, 2018, at about 2:15 pm, the accused went to the hostel and climbed up to the second floor where the complainants’ rooms were located.
She told the court that Sandra was standing by her door making a phone call when the accused person approached her and attacked her with a knife in an attempt to snatch her Infinix Hot 4 mobile phone, worth GH?450, from her.
Superintendent Mario narrated that Sandra, who had sustained multiple wounds on her face and neck, began to scream for help and Eunice, who lives in the next room, came out and tried to stop the accused from escaping.
She said Prince Adu-Gyamfi did not spare her too as he stabbed her in the chest and descended the staircase.
The prosecutor told the court that the accused was however, apprehended by other occupants and handed over to the police.
