A private legal practitioner, Victoria Bright, has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to work closely with Dr. Bryan Acheampong and position him as a strategic asset for the party.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, Ms. Bright disclosed that Dr. Acheampong has a commanding and strong power base in the party, despite not occupying the top position, and is actively positioning himself for greater influence.
“I think Dr. Bawumia needs to navigate the whole Bryan situation very carefully,” she said.
She stressed that Dr. Acheampong has the potential to be an ally or a rival depending on how he is managed in the party.
“He can either be an ally or a rival, and how Dr. Bawumia manages this will be a test of his leadership within the party,” she stated.
Ms. Bright added that Dr. Acheampong needs to be handled correctly, as he represents resources and networks.
“Bryan represents resources, networks, and a tested national operation, which makes him potentially dangerous if not handled correctly,” she pointed out.
The private legal practitioner further recommended that Dr. Bawumia works together with Dr. Acheampong for the benefit of the party and himself.
“The other possibility, which is what I would do if I were in his shoes, is to work with him, partner with him, and turn him into an asset for the party; an institutional asset,” she stressed.
She added that Dr. Acheampong should be assigned with tangible responsibilities. “Dr. Bawumia should assign him responsibilities with measurable outcomes,” she advised, adding that such activities will convert him into an asset rather than a rival.
Ms. Bright also cautioned against giving big titles without real power.
She said, “Politicians often hand out titles with zero responsibility. You have the title, but no real power.”
Former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, won the just-ended New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primary with 110,643 votes.
Official results collated by the Electoral Commission showed that Dr. Bawumia secured a clear majority of the 195,901 valid votes cast in the nationwide election held last Saturday.
Kennedy Ohene Agyapong placed second with 46,554 votes, while Dr. Bryan Acheampong placed third with 36,303 votes, followed by Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum (1,999 votes), and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong (402 votes).
