THE KUMASI Metropolis looks set to recapture its lost ‘Garden City’ status in a few months, as the city benefitted from a massive tree-planting exercise last Saturday morning.

The members of the Rotary Club of Kumasi, led by their President, Ing Nana Poku Agyeman, planted 500 trees made up of different species within two hours in the city.

Fulfilling their motto: ‘Service Above Self’, the Rotary Club members, some of whom are seasoned businessmen and public officials, left the comfort of their homes and planted the trees at vantage points in the city.

The Rotary Club of Kumasi was assisted by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to plant the trees. The Kumasi Mayor, Osei Assibey Antwi, was present.

Dubbed: ‘Planting a Tree Project’, the tree-planting exercise, aside from making Kumasi look green and beautiful, is also aimed at helping KMA to realise its ‘Operation Keep Kumasi Clean and Green’ agenda.

Ing. Nana Poku Agyeman said Rotary, all over the world, plays leading roles to help bring the needed transformation into the lives of people, and that was what influenced them to plant the trees.

He said the Rotary Club of Kumasi is aware of the efforts being put up by the KMA to help restore the green and beautiful status of Kumasi, adding that “we have decided to offer a helping hand so that our great city of Kumasi will be green again”.

Ing. Nana Poku Agyeman, who is also the Kumasi Metro Roads Director, gave an assurance that the tree-planting exercise would not be a nine days’ wonder, stating that his outfit would periodically plant trees in the city.

The Rotary Club of Kumasi had in the past dug boreholes for some communities, built toilet facilities, supported KATH Burns Unit and also donated computers to the Osei Tutu II Educational Complex, Tetrem, among other support.

Mr. Osei Assibey Antwi said he was extremely touched by the passion with which the Rotary Club members planted the trees, urging other groups to emulate their shining example to help beautify the city.
