Former President John Dramani Mahama is pleading with members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), particularly his supporters, to stop insulting the party’s founder, former President Jerry John Rawlings.
Mr Mahama argued that although some party members may have their differences with Mr Rawlings and not like some of his actions, particularly towards the NDC, that should not be grounds to insult him.
Some NDC members, who are ardent supporters of Mr Mahama, have been hurling insults at the party’s founder, describing him as a ‘traitor,’ among others.
The NDC members believe that Rawlings, who was very critical of the previous Mahama administration, is in bed with President Akufo-Addo, hence his inability to criticize the current president.
Former President Mahama asked the party members on Saturday to be decorous in their comments about the party’s founder.
“You might not like something he says or might not like an action that he has taken. You can disagree with his views [but] don’t insult him; don’t insult his person,” he told supporters in Wa in the Upper West Region during the party’s Unity Walk, which has sarcastically been named ‘Mahama Walk’ by some NDC members.
Mr Mahama underscored the need for NDC members to be decorous in their political discourse, highlighting the power of the tongue.
“What you speak has more power than even your physical action and the words, once they leave your mouth, you cannot take them back.”
He stressed the need for candidates and the electorate to avoid the use of ‘injurious’ words.
“The people you may insult would be the same people you would need to work with to achieve your mandate when elected as executives of the party, he added.
“That is why we must be very careful, and I urge all to be positive and I’m not talking only within our party but outside our party. Let us talk about ideas and not personal insults, he said.
Super Incompetent
He described the current Akufo-Addo administration as super incompetent.
The former president stated that Ghanaians are suffering under the Akufo-Addo administration which he described as the worst since independence.
According to him, the highly incompetent and non-performing government of Nana Akufo-Addo would do itself a great deal of good by going for stickers of the controversial man of God, Bishop Daniel Obinim.
He noted that the sticker has the power to solve all manner of issues, and the testimonies of users of the stickers are more than enough to prove its efficacy.
“Since the sticker has such powers, it could probably resurrect the dead economy, and make it better to bring relief to Ghanaians and improve the standard of living in Ghana.”
Mr Mahama stated that the NDC is more committed to the advancement of democracy and progress of Ghana than any political party in the country, adding that it is not in the party’s interest and plan to overthrow any government.
He pointed out that the comments of Koku Anyidoho do not reflect the position of the party, adding that the party cannot be responsible for such statements.
“NDC’s stand on democracy and the rule of law is clear, and over the years this reflected in its response to elections unlike the NPP which doubted the credibility of the Electoral Commission (EC) when it declared the outcome of the 2012 elections and subsequently proceeded to court.”
Former President John Mahama assured party supporters that the NDC would capture power from the NPP in 2020 to steer the affairs of the country.
“The NDC is the Moses to bring Ghanaians to the promise land- the land flowing with milk and honey where living conditions are improved with better conditions for businesses to thrive and reduce unemployment massively.”
Mr. Mahama urged party faithful and executives to work hard to recapture power from the NPP in the next general election.
“The super incompetence of the NPP is not enough grounds for the NDC to win the next general elections but hard work,” he added.
