Delta Force
A Kumasi District Court yesterday sentenced 13 members of the group calling itself “Delta Force,” said to be affiliated to the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to a total fine GH¢23,400 for rioting.
Kwadwo Fosu, Anwal Sadat Abubakar, Abubakar Sadiq Abdul-Hameed, Jamil Issah, Hamza Mohammed, Salu Issahak, Akwasi Owusu, Kwabena Owusu, Kofi Kyei, Agya Badu, Salu Yussif, Yussif Salu and Kwaku Awotwe, would each pay GH¢1,800 or in default, spend 12 months in jail.
They were additionally ordered to sign a bond to be of good behaviour for 12 months; and would serve 12 months imprisonment in hard labour, should they breach the bond.
They had been charged with conspiracy to commit crime and rioting, and they all pleaded guilty.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Asumadu Okyere-Darko, told the court, presided over by Owusu Korkor Achiaw, that the complainant is the Ashanti Regional Security Liaison Officer.
The complainant received information on March 23 that the convicts were preparing to storm his office to register their displeasure with his appointment.
He made a formal complaint to the police and the following day at about 0900 hours, while performing his routine duties, the 13, together with others, drove in five Sprinter Benz buses and on motorbikes to attack him.
The police quickly moved in to rescue him and the convicts were arrested.
They claimed in their caution statement to have gone to the place to peacefully protest against the security liaison officer’s appointment.
Mr. Achiaw, passing the sentence, advised them to be of good behaviour and law-abiding.
