2 Confirmed Dead, 5 Arrested Over Shooting In Bawku

Two persons have been confirmed dead in the Wednesday dawn exchanges of gunfire between military officers and some civilians in Bawku in the Upper East Region.

Three military officers attached to the 11th Mechanized Infantry Battalion at Bolgatanga sustained various degrees of injuries in the gun battle.

The injured military officers have been airlifted to the 37 Military Hospital for treatment as the bodies have been deposited at the Bawku Municipal Hospital’s morgue for autopsy.

Meanwhile, the police have picked up five civilians in connection with the incident and currently in police custody assisting with investigations.

Speaking on the matter, the Bawku Municipal Police Commander, Superintendent Simon Akabati, told a radio station on Thursday that the military were on special duties to arrest some people who were causing confusion in the area when the incident happened.

He refused claim that three people died, saying that it is “two people who died and not three as it has been reported.”

According to the Commander, “They died as a result of the exchange of guns with the military and some people having been arrested.

In fact, five people were arrested and two people were killed.”
