The accident scene
Two persons died on the spot while three others sustained various degrees of injury when an articulator truck, loaded with bags of cement, ran into seven other vehicles at Pokuase on the Accra-Nsawam road.
The dead, according to the police, were yet to be identified by their relatives, but two of the injured persons whose conditions were critical, were sent to the 37 Military Hospital for treatment while the other is at the Amasaman Government Hospital receiving treatment.
Earlier report suggested that 10 people were dead in the fatal accident and 13 other vehicles were involved.
An eyewitness account indicated that the truck, heading towards Nsawam, had brake failure, veered off the road and plowed into three Kia trucks, a Ford Explorer and a taxi it was following closely.
The driver of one of the vehicles reportedly died on the spot while a trader selling carpets by the roadside was also ran over and killed.
Confirming the accident to DAILY GUIDE, Chief Inspector James Nsiah of the Amasaman Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) – who was at the scene with other personnel – said the accident occurred around 11:15am yesterday at the Pokuase junction.
The Scania articulator truck with registration number GW 1617-10 and driven by one Issaka Mumuni, 37, was from Ofankor and heading towards Nsawam.
On reaching the John Teye School, the driver said the brakes failed and the vehicle rammed into the seven vehicles which were moving slowing due to traffic.
