Six out of 12 persons who broke jail at Atadeka Police Station in Zenu near Ashaiman during the Easter holidays and were re-arrested, have been jailed by the Ashaiman Circuit Court.
Three of them, namely Abdul Basit Sayiti Sulemana, 24, fabricator, Ibrahim Musah alias Freedom, 26, auto mechanic, and Ali Musah Kalamulai, 21, a driver’s mate, who were rounded up after escaping to the Volta Region, were jailed 24 months each for escaping from lawful custody.
On Tuesday, three suspects that were arrested few hours after they broke jail, were given 12 months each in hard labour by the same court presided over His Honour Richard Delali Anku Jr.
They were identified as Akorli Amisha, Ibrahim Adams and Mubarack Seiti.
Amisha, Adams and Seiti had pleaded guilty to conspiracy and escape from lawful custody, but said they were not guilty on the charge of assault on public officer, and were convicted on their own plea.
They will however return to court on April 28 to face the charge of assault on public officer.
The three, arrested in Juapong in the Volta Region, were charged with conspiracy to commit crime, to wit escaping from lawful custody, contrary section 23 of the Criminal Offence Act, 1960 (Act 29) as well as assault of public officer contrary section 205 (A) of the Criminal Offences Act.
When they broke jail, the police released the names of suspects like Musah Ali, Richard Romeo, Basit Sulemana, Sumaila Karim, Amish Akorli, Musah Ibrahim, Abu Sadique, Mubarak Seiti, Ibrahim Adams, Ibrahim Fuseini, Aziz Fuseini and Sulemana Ibrahim, as being wanted.
The inmates were said to have poured hot porridge on the face of one of the policemen at the station and managed to escape.
Information available to DAILY GUIDE indicates that the incident occurred on Sunday morning at about 6:30am when a police counter officer with the rank of a sergeant attempted to put a fresh suspect in the male cells.
One of the inmates, who was given porridge for breakfast, then poured the hot food on the face of the policeman.
The policeman was blinded by the porridge within seconds, and the inmates in custody seized the opportunity to push the metal door open and started escaping.
