EIGHT people were reportedly killed on Wednesday when a disused gold mining pit collapsed in the Central Regional town of Ayamfuri.
Deputy Police Public Relations Officer of the Central Regional Police Command, Sergeant Evans Effia, said the ground caved in around 7:00 pm at the gold mining site said to be popular with illegal miners.
According to him, rescuers removed eight bodies of male adults, between the ages of 24 and 35, four hours after the collapse of the pit which is popularly known as Face Four, located at the outskirts of Ayamfuri.
“With the help of the police and some neighbours in the area, the men were recovered from the belly of the earth and taken to the Dunkwa on-Offin Government Hospital where they were pronounced dead on arrival,” he narrated.
Sgt. Effia said all the bodies had been deposited at the hospital morgue for identification and autopsy, and added that the accident scene had been cordoned off with daily patrols while investigations continued.
