The Rotary Club of Accra-Labone has donated 50 wheelchairs to three beneficiaries as part of their ‘Wheels For Hope Project’ which has an objective of distributing 100 wheels chairs by the end of 2016.
The project was launched on June 14, 2016 as part of the club’s aim of supporting healthcare delivery and the physically disabled in the society.
The Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Korle-Bu Polyclinic and the Ghana Society for the Physically Disabled (GSPD) benefitted from the gesture.
According to the President of Rotary Club, Accra-Labone, Rotarian RP Apanga, there are persons who have become immobile as a result of illness or infirmity and in most cases these people are very resourceful and can contribute to societal growth but their inability to move makes them appear as a liability to their families and dependants.
He revealed that it was for that reason that the club came up with the ‘Wheels For Hope Project’ to support the immobile persons in order to improve national productivity.
He disclosed that the Rotary Club was supported by Cnergy Ghana, SupraPharma and G2 Medical Laboratories in the realisation of the donation and stated that each wheel chair costs GH¢400.
On behalf of GSPD, Alfred Quarshie expressed their gratitude to the Rotary Club and their partners, and pledged to put the wheels to good use.
Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Mustapha Salifu, also added that the hospital would ensure that the wheels would serve the purpose of healthcare facilitation.
Departmental Head, Korle-Bu Polyclinic, Dr Priscilla Vandyck Sey, on behalf of the polyclinic, charged the Rotary Club to continue to help them in providing quality healthcare to the masses.
