The Ghana Police Service has dismissed claims that it is colluding with the Electoral Commission (EC) to add more names to the list of special voters scheduled for December 1.
A section of the media recently reported that Ghana Police Service in collaboration with the EC have embarked on an exercise to add the names of more Police officers and recruits to the special voters’ list.
Three political parties – NDP, PPP and the PNC – in a joint statement Thursday also alleged that the elections will not be free and fair.
But the Director of Operations of the Ghana Police Service, COP Christian Tetteh Yohonu on Friday described the report as false and baseless adding that police officers have already gone through the registration process.
“It is not true that we are adding new names to the special voting list so as to bloat it…there’s no way somebody can vote if the person is not a registered voter. Whether the person is voting on the D-Day of voting or is voting on the special day, the person has only one opportunity to vote.
“There’s nothing like any new names, all the people that we have are all registered, valid voters, and they have the opportunity to vote only once.”
Meanwhile, the Chief of Defence Staff Air Marshal Michael Samson-Oje has warned that the military will deal ruthlessly with who intends to foment trouble during the polls.
“I’ll like to sound a note of caution to any person or group of persons who intend to cause any kind of trouble during the election period. We in the military are ready and prepared together with the civil police and our other sister security services to deal ruthlessly with any such group of persons or person,”
