Voltaians Reject Voters’ Region Tag

Re-elected MP – Benjamin Kpodo

Some residents in the Volta Region have described as “baseless and insulting” the description that the region is a ‘voter region.’

They have insisted that Voltaians are independent-minded people who can think for themselves and make their own choices.

The residents made the observation when DAILY GUIDE sampled the views of Voltaians on the rationale behind the low voter turnout last week Wednesday, December 7th, when Ghana went to the polls.
According to the residents, the outcome of the elections testifies to the fact that Volataians are fed up with unfulfilled political promises and could no longer be taken for granted.

The Volta Region, which is the stronghold of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has over the years been given different tags because of its unflinching support for the NDC.

As a result, the region has been labeled the “World Bank” of the NDC whiles others think it is merely a region for voters (voters’ region) – as it only votes for the NDC without expecting anything in return.

Prior to the December 7, 2016 elections, the NDC had set a target of winning one million votes in the Volta Region and that it would win all the parliamentary seats. The outcome of the elections however, saw the NDC garnering just a little over 630,000 votes and lost one parliamentary seat in the Krachi East Constituency to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Mr. Kosikuma Hovi, a senior journalist in Ho opined, “Although the NDC enjoys a massive support in the Volta Region, that is not enough to label the region as a voters’ region because the opposition NPP also enjoys huge support in the Ashanti Region yet nobody labels the region as such.”
