MTN Teacher Improvement Award Programme has presented GH¢125,000 scholarship package to 20 teachers.

Ten of the teachers gained scholarship to pursue their first degree programmes while the other 10 would pursue their Masters programmes.

The Teacher Improvement Awards Programme was instituted by the MTN Foundation to assist teachers in first and second cycle public institutions to further their education.

This year, the beneficiaries comprised 10 men and 10 women as against 15 men and 5 women last year.

Last year, the MTN Foundation also supported 20 teachers. 18 teachers pursued their bachelors and Masters programmes.

Two of the beneficiaries have successfully graduated from the University of Education, Winneba with Masters in English language.

Cynthia Lumor, Corporate Services Executive of MTN, in her remarks at the awards event, said the programme is aimed at improving teachers’ knowledge in Science, Mathematics and English since these subjects continue to be core tools in many fields of study.

They also help equip pupils with a uniquely powerful set of skills, including logical reasoning and problem solving, she said.

“It is the firm belief of MTN Ghana Foundation that beneficiaries of the Teachers’ Improvement Award programme would be better equipped to transform teaching and learning in the classroom.

“This will ultimately build the capacity of the students for personal and national development,” Mrs Lumor said.

She encouraged all female teachers to take advantage of the scholarship scheme since statistics show very low female participation.

“We need more women to participate in the scholarship scheme for the greater benefit of the entire country.

Former awardees commended MTN for supporting them, appealing to Ghanaians to patronize the products and services of MTN to help the company to support teachers.
