Essikafoambantem No2 in Takoradi submerged
Some parts of the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis in the Western Region saw massive flooding on Monday after nearly six hours of torrential rainfall.
The flood water forced its way into residential apartments, churches, schools, commercial centres, stores and offices, destroying properties. Most of the areas affected were the Takoradi Market Circle and the surrounding communities.
A visit to Essikafoambantem No. 2, a suburb of Takoradi, revealed that the entire area was flooded.
The rain, which started at about 4:00 am and subsided at about 10:00 am, made places such as Anaji, ‘I Adu’ and Ntankoful, submerge for the very first time.
Properties worth millions of Ghana cedis were lost, while a school pupil nearly got drowned at Bankyease, near Takoradi.
Some major streets at the Market Circle were also submerged and as a result, most shops and stores were closed.
At Kwesimintsim, Bankyease and Ntankoful, residents had to move out of their rooms which had been taken over by the flood.
On the Sekondi-Takoradi Highway, the compound of the Opportunities Industrialization Centre (OIC), a vocational training institute, was flooded.
The situation at OIC when DAILY GUIDE visited
Most of the residents attributed the problem to the many buildings and other structures which are said to have been constructed on water courses.
A female resident in one of the affected areas told DAILY GUIDE that the water level in her room was up to the knee and that she and her dependants had to use buckets to draw out the water.
According to her, the drains had been choked with garbage and blamed the city authorities for failing to pay heed to their call to desilt them.
