‘Witches Don’t Cause Sickle Cell Disease’

Dr Brown Osei Konadu presenting a food supplement to a sickle cell patient

A renowned medical practitioner in Kumasi, Dr Brown Osei Konadu, has flatly debunked assertions that sickle cell disease is caused by witches and wizards.

He explained that the disease is a worldwide epidemic which is caused through the blood genotype of male and female partners who produce a child.

The medical expert has, therefore, entreated the public to desist from linking superstition and witchcraft with sickle cell disease, which is preventable.

Dr Brown is the President of the Blood and Genotype Awareness Foundation (BGAF). He is also the CEO of Holy Covenant Health Centre in Kumasi.

He was addressing the media during the annual celebration of this year’s World Sickle Cell Week, which was marked across the globe on June 19, this year.

Dr Brown stated that the suitable solution to prevent sickle cell disease is for parents (male and female) with the right blood groups to produce a child.

“Know your blood genotype before you enter into relationships, both parents, so as to prevent you from producing sickle cell disease children,” he advised.

Dr Brown explained that sickle cell disease victims usually suffer a lot of complications, including being anaemic, suffering jaundice, collapse of blood cells, among others.

He, therefore, entreated the public to make sure that they enter into relationships with people with the right blood groups to prevent sickle cell disease children.

Meanwhile, BGAF has presented food supplements worth GH¢ 5,000 to selected sickle cell disease patients whose age range from five to 21 years.

BGAF usually organises sickle cell disease screening exercise and education to sensitise people on the need to prevent the spread of the disease.
