4 Drown In White Volta

Dead bodies retrieved at Binbinni

Four persons have been confirmed dead at Binbinni in the West Mamprusi District of the Northern Region after the canoe they were traveling with capsized on the White Volta.

Information available indicates that the bodies were retrieved by some residents in the community and officials of ‘Operation Thunderbolt’ of the National Disaster Management (NADMO) stationed at Walewale, the district capital.

Five men were reportedly on board the canoe, which was traveling to a nearby village to assist a brother who is farming in the area.

The canoe is said to have developed a crack in the middle of the river, causing it to capsize.

One person managed to swim ashore and reported the incident to the community members for help.

The four bodies were found after a long search with boats and other installations brought to the district to deal with floodwaters.

After some medical examination was conducted on the bodies, they were released to their families and have since been buried.

The Deputy Director General of NADMO, Abu Ramadan, who confirmed the incident, said ‘Operation Thunderbolt’ received a call about the incident and rushed to the scene.

According to him, the team moved all their resources to the place but they rather retrieved dead bodies.

Mr Ramadan cautioned the residents to use safety life jackets anytime they are embarking on such journeys.

Meanwhile, officials of NADMO have educated the residents on how to wear the jackets.
