The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), K.K Sam, has stressed the need for all elected and appointed assembly members as well as the various metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives (MMDCEs) to support the government to achieve its development agenda.
According to the MCE, the policies and programmes being implemented by the government would definitely improve the living conditions of the people of Ghana and help put the nation on the path of progress and prosperity.
“I am just reminding you that as the representatives of the people in the electoral areas, constituencies and assemblies, it is our duty to ensure that the programmes and policies that come from the central government to our areas are implemented…,” he indicated.
Mr K.K Sam implored all the MMDCEs in the Western Region to close their ranks and together fight for development in their respective areas and the region as a whole.
The Sekondi-Takoradi MCE made this call when he addressed a one-day regional delegates’ conference of the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG) at Sekondi yesterday to elect a representative to the association.
It was themed, “The Role of the Local Authority in the implementation of the Global Agenda for Sustainable Development.”
He entreated the members of NALAG in the region to redouble their efforts to meet the aims and objectives of the association.
Mr K.K Sam indicated that some of the existing districts and electoral areas are too large to make for meaningful implementation of the decentralization policy, adding, “That is why we support the government’s policy of creating more regions and districts.”
He pointed out that the decentralization policy requires collective grassroots participation, mobilization and monitoring of human and material resources to enhance local government administration.
The General Secretary of NALAG, Amankwaa Kokuro, who read NALAG President’s speech, indicated that the association is devoted to the efficient implementation of the decentralization policy of the government.
He told the participants that the quest by NALAG to secure motorbikes for the members had gone through lots of challenges, but added that the first batch of the motorbikes is in the country adding, “We are just waiting for the other batches for distribution.”
