The stranded passengers at Yeji
Passengers traveling from the Northern Region via the Salaga-Yeji road have been left stranded at Makango and Yeji as the ferry does not have the capacity to carry all the buses they are travelling on.
The passengers, according to reports, are compelled to spend the night in the buses until it gets to their turn to be carried by the ferry.
Following the closure of the two main bridges – Buipe and Yapei – that link the region to the southern part of the country, movement from both detinations has become very difficult and uncomfortable.
Some passengers carrying foodstuffs have been complaining bitterly for fear that their items might spoil due to the number of days they stay at Makango and Yeji.
The Yapei and Buipe bridges were closed after some deep cracks were noticed on them. The closure is therefore to make room for maintenance and repair works to be carried out.
The conditions of the bridges are frightening and for that matter, not motor-able, forcing the road ministry to close the bridges for emergency repairs.
According to the Roads Minister, Kwasi Amoako-Atta, the cracks .developed all of a sudden, which called for immediate repairs to prevent any catastrophe from happening on the stretch.
However, the attention of DAILY GUIDE has been drawn to the exorbitant fares being charged by drivers due to the closure of the two bridges.
Buses which hitherto were charging GH¢80.00 are now charging GH¢100.00 per passenger.
Some passengers and drivers who use the eastern corridor road have appealed to the government to work fast on it to enable them have smooth journeys.
Meanwhile, management of the ferry at Yeji has indicated that it would get additional ferry to support the existing one to ease the congestion at the place.
