Pedestrians Commend Assembly

Ama Kumi-Richardson – MCE Sunyani

Residents of Sunyani have commended the Sunyani Municipal Assembly for embarking on a decongestion exercise to clear hawkers, petty traders and indiscipline drivers from unauthorised places.

The exercise, which commenced on Wednesday, is being enforced by the Assembly’s taskforce in collaboration with police and military personnel to ensure that pavement, pedestrian walkways and the streets in the metropolis were free for smooth socio-economic activities.

A number of them interviewed by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) expressed worry about the activities of traders and hawkers that impede the flow of vehicular and human traffic.

According to them, adequate notice was given by the Assembly for the people to move to the spacious Nana Bosomah Market, but that was ignored by the traders.

They called on the Assembly to sustain the exercise and be firm to ignore all kinds of appeals and pressures that might be upon them to stop it.
Ama Kumi-Richardson, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), who met the various market queens, advised them to urge their members not to sell on the streets and pavements, but move to the main market for pedestrians and buyers to park their vehicles and freely move around.

She asked traders, hawkers and drivers not to provoke members of the taskforce since the implementation of the exercise would benefit the public.

Meanwhile, some affected traders and drivers have complained bitterly about the exercise, since according to them, the market and the lorry station could not contain all of them.
