The Chief Executive Officer of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Mohammed Adjei Sowah, has congratulated players, technical and management team of the Osu Presbyterian Senior High School (Osu-PRESEC) for winning the 2018 Sprite Ball Championship.

According to him, the success of the team is a proof that investing in lesser-known sports unearths great sporting talents which can contribute to unemployment reduction in the country.

The Mayor of Accra said this when the team from Osu-PRESEC paid a courtesy call on him to present the trophy won at this year’s Sprite Ball Competition held at the El -Wak Sports Stadium.

Osu-PRESEC made history by beating the four time winners of the prestigious competition, Mfantsipim Senior High School at the final stages of the competition to lift the trophy.

The Mayor said the players’ performance had shown that with little support they can move out of the shores of the country to win international trophies.

Mr. Sowah said the assembly would invest more in sports so as to unearth more talents 3, expressing the hope that the Osu-PRESEC team would be the nucleus of Ghana’s basket ball success.

“I will be taking delivery of some sports equipment, I don’t know the exact composition of the equipment but once I find basketball equipment in the package, I will personally come to your school to deliver them,” he said.

He urged the team to defend the title and ensure that it does not leave the city adding that the sport could earn them some scholarships around the world.

“God willing we will have to defend this cup next year and it should not be said that another team prepared so hard to beat us…we have to retain the cup here in Accra,” he said.

Headmistress of the school who led the delegation noted that the team was adjudged the best team and that was because they won the match at the group stage, the quarter finals, the semifinals and then the finals.

She also added that, the team won the most valuable player, and five of the boys qualified for the reality show for sprite ball with their coach also adjudged the best.

Sprite Ball Championship, is an annual inter-High Schools basketball tournament in Ghana, and has the objective of unearthing talents and developing existing ones amongst high schools in Ghana.
