2 Killed In VVIP Crash

TWO PERSONS have died in a dawn accident at Okanta Number 1, a village community along the Accra-Kumasi highway in the Eastern Region.

Eyewitness account sais the accident happened when a Kumasi-bound VVIP bus with registration number GT 6417-10, collided with a Toyota Hiace mini bus with registration number GN 5664-17.

The VVIP bus, according to the eyewitness, was attempting to overtake another bus when it rammed into the oncoming Toyota Haice, killing its (Toyota’s) two occupants instantly.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Nsawam Government Hospital pending autopsy.

Police and Fire Service personnel rushed to the accident scene to assess the situation and maintain order, since there was heavy traffic jam on the highway.

Before the accident, 10 persons had been killed at the same stretch of the road, this time, involving a VIP bus and a trailer. Many others sustained various degrees of injury.

A total of 1,233 accident cases were recorded in 2017 in the Eastern Region, with 1,732 vehicles involved.

According to a report by the Motor Transport and Traffic Department  (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, 374 persons perished while 2,254 were injured.
