Armed Robbers Kill 2 At Pelungu

Two persons have been killed by armed robbers on motorbikes at the Pelungu market today in the Talensi District in the Upper East Region.

The two deceased persons (names not available at the time of filing this report) have been identified as natives of Zanlerigu and Damon-Tindongo communities in the Talensi District, who had come to the Pelungu market for various activities.

Today happens to be a market day in Pelungu, and as usual, a large number of people travelled from far and near to either buy or sell at the place.

They robbed a First Allied Bank agency at the Pelungu market and an electrical shop before killing the two persons, as they cleared their way to escape with their booty.

In an interview with the DAILY GUIDE, the assembly member for the Pelungu Electoral Area, Zataba Ghitaaba Gilbert, revealed that this is the first time an incident like that has happened at the Pelungu market in many years.

He added that the presence of the two financial institutions might have attracted the robbers to the market.

“Pelungu market is a big and busy market apart from that of Bawku and Navrongo. Even the Pelungu township has expanded and the population and business activities have increased and so the banks will definitely come in and the number of shops will increase. It think it is time Pelungu had a police post to handle security issues here. This case for example, the police came in after the incident had happened and the people had left long time,” Mr Ghitaaba stated.

The Upper East Regional Minister, Rockson Ayine Bukari, had earlier called on the people of the district and other districts in the region to be vigilant and report anyone or group they suspect might be of security threat to their community to the police.

At the time of filing this report, Mr Bukari was holding a security meeting.
