Rebecca Foundation To Partner Minerals Commission

First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo

First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo says her foundation is ready to partner the Minerals Commission to support three key projects of the foundation targeted at improving women economic status, keeping girls in school and reducing malaria and malnutrition in priority populations.

This came to light when the Minerals Commission Board, led by S.K. Boafo met the First Lady at her office in Accra.

The First Lady was elated that the Minerals Commission Board shares in her dream of women economic empowerment, girls’ education, among other health projects.

She noted that the Minerals Commission is well placed to facilitate support in these areas of the Foundation’s work since the central government alone cannot shoulder the responsibility of financing developmental projects in the country.

On his part, Mr Boafo first commended Mrs Akufo-Addo for reducing child and mother mortality in Ghana through the ‘Save a Child, Save a Mother’ project.

He noted that currently government was implementing Alternative Livelihood Projects (ALPs) in mining communities and that the Minerals Commission seeks to collaborate with the Rebecca Foundation to support women, especially in mining communities, to undertake these livelihood projects to improve their economic status.

He also noted that a gender desk had been established at the Commission to address issues relating to women and children in mining communities, adding that the Commission would also collaborate with the Chamber of Mines to support the Rebecca Foundation’s initiative of keeping girls in school and more especially “Save a Child, Save a Mother” project.

He gave assurance that the Commission would continue to play its facilitating role, as well as collaborate with industry to ensure that mining serves as a growth pole for development in Ghana.
