President Akufo-Addo cutting sod for 1 Village 1 Dam at Savelugu
With some 570 dams expected to be dug in the Northern Region as part of government’s commitment to promote all-year-round farming and end the perennial water crisis in the region, President Akufo-Addo has cut sod for the commencement of construction of one of the dams in the Savelugu municipal area.
The dam will serve as modernization of agriculture with rural electrification incorporated into it.
According to Emmanuel Larbi, the CEO of Hi-Limit, the construction company in charge of the project, the facility will be an integrated agriculture and renewable energy with a 3,600 cattle dairy farm.
The cattle dung from the dairy farm will be processed into methane gas which will be used to pump water to the irrigated farms with some of the gas being used to power electric supply to communities in the catchment area of the irrigated farms.
The project is expected to span through a four-year period after which it will be completed and handed over to government for use.
The President projected that the agricultural modernization project would increase the ‘bread basket’ of the country with farmers practising all-year-round farming.
The President revealed that his government was committed to improving health delivery in the country. As a result, he has tasked the sector minister to revamp the chip compound system of health delivery and identify more opportunities to extend and expand health delivery coverage in the country while finding lasting solutions to the ‘no bed’ syndrome and other challenges confronting the sector.
The paramount chief of Savelugu, Naa-Yoo VII, appreciated the President for his many social interventions aimed at improving the living standards of Ghanaians.
He however appealed to the President and his government to establish a tertiary institution in the municipality to impart advanced knowledge into its citizens and improve the quality of education in the municipality.
The paramount chief indicated that the dam when completed would reach out to more farmers engaged in all-year-round farming in the municipality.
