The Western Regional Police Command has intercepted a cargo truck loaded with about 92 bales of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drug.
According to sources, the DAF truck was from Apremdo and heading towards Tarkwa – both in Western Region. It was loaded with compressed parcels of dried leaves concealed in bales together with other items when the police intercepted it.

Three suspects were arrested and taken to the police station where they were detained and the vehicle containing the exhibits impounded.

The suspects with the exhibits were later handed over to the Drug Law Enforcement Unit of the Ghana Police Service at Sekondi for investigations.

However, the driver of the truck whose name was given as Taller and another suspect, Yaw Kojo, managed to escape.

DSP Olivia Ewurabena Adiku, Western Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), who confirmed the story to DAILY GUIDE, mentioned that the truck was intercepted at about 10 am on Tuesday.

She explained that policemen on duty at Apremdo barrier intercepted a DAF cargo truck with registration number AS 5138-11 for a routine check.

She indicated that the truck was carrying goods with five persons on board and was moving towards Tarkwa direction.

“During the search, the police discovered bales of sacks containing dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drug”, she added.

She continued: “Further search in the vehicle revealed 92 bales of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drug. The occupants of the vehicle including the driver immediately took to their heels”.

DSP Adiku indicated that the police with the help of some civilians managed to arrest three of the suspects whose names were given as Kwaku Quansah, Francis Ackah and Ali Amadu.

She pointed out that the suspects and the vehicle were handed over to Western Regional Drug Law Enforcement Unit (DLEU) for further investigations.

The Regional Police PRO noted that the exhibits and vehicle had been retained for evidential purposes whiles efforts were being made to arrest the driver and the other suspect who managed to escape.
