Some 493 people in the Adentan Municipality in Accra have benefited from the government’s flagship “Planting for Foods and Jobs” programme through the supply of subsidised seeds and fertilisers.
Farmers have additionally received 543 litres of assorted chemicals to control the fall armyworm infestation.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Adentan, Daniel Alexander Nii Noi Adumuah, gave the information when he addressed journalists at a metropolitan, municipal and district chief executive (MMDCE) meet-the-press series held in Accra last Friday.
He indicated that about 200 farmers had also undergone various technical training programmes to improve their farming techniques under a five-year Modernising Agriculture in Ghana (MAG) project.
He said the assembly had embarked on two European Union (EU)-funded local economic development projects which consisted of mushroom production and Fish for Development Project (FIDEP).
“So far, 5,500 people have been trained to produce mushroom along the value chain, 48 farmers including 12 people with disabilities have been given direct support totalling 92,000 without interest,” he said.
Besides, the MCE said over 2,000 beneficiaries were expected to be trained at a yet-to-be completed Fish Demonstration Centre under the FIDEP.
Addressing sanitation within the municipality, Mr. Adumuah said 11 out of 17 institutionalised toilet facilities under the GAMA sanitation project had been completed and handed over to various schools, while additional five are set to be completed and handed over by the end of the year.
Other sanitation interventions he mentioned included piloting of waste segregation programme within the municipality, placing of 12 central waste containers at vantage points in the assembly and the construction of 1,800 household toilets.
Speaking on social intervention programmes in the assembly, he said 289 households were benefitting from the Livelihood Empowerment Programme (LEAP) while 1,300 youth had been employed within the assembly under the Nation Builders Corp (NABCO) programme.
He also disclosed that issues of child protection had improved over the past three years as “80 successful child custody cases were done, 123 maintenance cases were dealt with successfully, 60 missing but found children were reunified with their families, 30 abandoned babies were also amicably dealt with,” he added.
