Veteran Ghanaian highlife musician, Obiba Sly Collins, has been honoured by Class FM, a subsidiary of Class Media Group, for his contribution towards peace and stability in the country through music.
The musician, who is also a businessman, over the years has contributed to the development of peace in the country through music campaigns and sensitising Ghanaians on the need to maintain peace amidst elections and other violent-related occasions.
He has also worked with other talented musicians across the globe to spread messages of peace and activism throughout the world.
Class Media honoured him with a citation that reads, “The legacy of heroes is the memory of a great name and the inheritance of a great example. On behalf of Class Media Group, Accra FM-Nkran Kwanso, say well done.”
According to Obiba Sly, his music provides a unique approach to peace building, which has the potential to help communities address the many stages of the conflict more constructively and creatively. “Of course, my music does not in itself end wars, eliminate structural inequalities, or heal deep psychological wounds. What it does, though, is to engage us in a thought process and allow us to access a deeper emotional context that we otherwise may never approach,” he said.
Amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine tensions, Obiba Sly has called on international bodies and foreign musicians to campaign for peace between the two countries, as more than 1.3 million people have fled Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion on February 24, and has been rendered homeless.
Obiba Sly, in 2021, released visuals of ‘Why Africa’, directed by David Wincott, with very touching lyrics about how Africa has been desolate and destroyed by the actions of its children.
He nevertheless warns that the corruption, fraud, nepotism, xenophobia, and greed which pervade the African continent will lead to Africa’s doom.
