Leisure Tourism Activities On Volta Lake Envisaged

Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Awal

Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Awal, has revealed the government’s plan that envisages buoyant leisure tourism activities on the Volta Lake and its environs in the medium to long term.

According to him, the Volta Lake is a great national asset, and that the ministry has started a series of engagements with relevant stakeholders, including the Volta River Authority (VRA) and selected private sector organisations for the project.

“In 2019, the ministry through its agency, the Ghana Tourism Authority, partnered with Apprise Company to launch the maiden ‘Adomi International River Festival’ in Akosombo to leverage the untapped opportunities of the Volta Lake,” he told Parliament.

The minister, who was answering questions on the floor of Parliament, said the event attracted hundreds of both domestic and international visitors.

“Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, the subsequent editions in 2020 and 2021 could not be held. This year, this will be rekindled,” he disclosed.

Dr. Awal indicated that other proposed infrastructure developments include water front resorts, boat cruises, kayaking, hiking, and camping; mostly driven by private sector investment.

“The idea is to redevelop the potential and package it into the 2023 work plan of the Ghana Tourism Development Project. The relevant stakeholders including the District Assembly and the traditional authorities will also be engaged to ensure the harmonisation of plans for Accra Town’s sustainable development,” he said.
