41,000 Voters Elect New MP In Assin North By-Election

Voting is currently underway in the by-election at Assin North constituency of the Central Region.
Over 41,000 registered voters are expected to vote at 99 polling stations in today’s by-election.

The voting commenced at exactly 7am.

The election is necessitated by the Supreme Court’s ruling against the deposed MP, James Gyekye Quayson,  for holding Canadian citizenship aside that of Ghana.

At some of the polling centres visited, the voters were in a queue ready to cast their votes, especially in Assin Breku, where the Electoral Commission has created three polling stations.

The Assin North constituency over the past few weeks has seen a lot of political activities, with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) formally ending their campaigns with rallies on Sunday, June 25, 2023,  ahead of the election.

The NDC has retained Gyekye Quayson as its candidate though he is facing criminal charges over his 2020 candidature.

The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) have Charles Opoku and Catherine Enyonam as their respective candidates.

Officials from the Electoral Commission (EC) headquarters in Accra are already in the Constituency to support the District.

As part of the security efforts, the Police have deployed over 800 personnel to the Constituency.

As at 5am on Tuesday the Police have beefed up security at various vantage points across the Constituency.

In addition, some Ministers of state and Members of Parliament are serving as polling agents across the centres for the ruling party while MPs are doing same for NDC.
