Mahama’s Aide Allegedly Insults Islamic Teachers

A recent social media post by Joyce Bawah Mogtari, cousin and spokesperson for former President John Mahama, has ignited a firestorm of controversy.

The NDC Campaign Team Spokesperson, Joyce Bawa Mogtari’s response to Samuel Atta Akyea’s comment about Mahama has been criticized for its perceived insult towards Islamic teachers.

Joyce Mogtari in a post on X platform, which has since been deleted, read: “If not for the NPP, I wouldn’t know someone taking alcohol for medical purposes is a crime. Your flagbearer speaks like a Makaranta Teacher. Worry about that; it has no care #MahamaForPresident.”

The Abuakwa South MP, Samuel Atta Akyea had earlier said, “Ghanaians should be lucky to have an economist (Dr. Bawumia) to vote for, to transform Ghana, rather than voting for a drunkard.”

He later clarified, “I was highlighting Dr. Bawumia’s credentials and not referring to former President John Mahama as a drunkard.”

The NDC has demanded an apology from Atta Akyea, with General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey saying, “Atta Akyea’s comment is a descending into the gutter and a sign of desperation from the NPP.”

The NPP Youth Wing has also thrown its support behind Atta Akyea, with a spokesperson saying, “We stand by our MP and believe his comment was misconstrued.”

Joyce Mogtari’s post has since sparked a heated debate on social media, with many calling for greater respect and tolerance in political discourse.

The members of the opposition National Democratic Congress, NDC have praised Joyce Mogtari for her response, while some have criticized her for deleting the post instead of apologizing.
