Ensign Global College (EGC) made a significant impact at the 131st Ngmayem Festival in October 2024, blending cultural celebrations with community health outreach. As part of their ongoing commitment to public health, the college, together with its students and alumni and in partnership with the Center for Global Surgery (CGS) of the University of Utah volunteered on Saturday the 19th of October to create awareness of breast cancer, engaging festival attendees with vital information on early detection and prevention.
This initiative was in joint collaboration with the Lower Manya Krobo Traditional Council, the Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Health Directorate, the Narbita Hospital, the Atua Government Hospital, the St. Martin DePorres Hospital, Top-Up Pharmacy and other local health stakeholders. Volunteers also participated in health screenings, providing checks for conditions such as hypertension and diabetes.
The Director of the Academic Program, Dr. Stephen Manortey, expressed his enthusiasm at the event.
He stated, “Participating in this year’s Ngmayem Festival as part of our 10th anniversary reflects Ensign’s deep-rooted mission to enhance community health and raise public awareness.”
Dr. Edward Kofi Sutherland, a faculty member (Medical Director at EGC/ Site Director for West Africa, CGS), accentuated, “We are proud to work with our community partners to extend proactive health education and support directly to the community.”
Additionally, the college joined the Krobo community for the Yokama Day Celebration on Monday the 21st of October, reaffirming its support for local development efforts. The President of the College, Prof. Stephen Alder, who was also present at the event, emphasized, “Ensign Global College is committed to working alongside the Krobo people and communities to promote education, health, and development. Together, we can create lasting change for future generations.”
Through these activities, Ensign Global College demonstrated its dedication to fostering health awareness and community engagement, making a meaningful contribution to this year’s Ngmayem Festival.
